Art & Friendship – March 2025

Emerald Ant is running a ‘Wednesday Club’ at Budmouth School in Weymouth. At 2pm every Wednesday, British and Afghan teenage girls meet to create art and talk about their different cultures. This is the second of Emerald Ant’s clubs for Afghan girls, whose families are relocated to the UK on the ARAP scheme. It is funded by Dorset Community Foundation’s Welcome Fund and run by artist Sarah Butterworth and youth worker, Stacy Burke, with our interpreter, Wagma. The club may be the only opportunity for the Afghan girls to socialize with their English peers. Many have missed out on years of education, and due to their English not being A level standard, they are still not in school despite wanting to progress their careers. The Budmouth sixth formers are providing a meaningful welcome. The club ends in April, we are looking for funding to continue this meaningful work.
