Emerald Ant’s cross-cultural club in Weymouth for teenage girls.
At 2pm every Wednesday, British and Afghan teenage girls meet in the art room at Budmouth School, to create art and talk about their different cultures. This is the second of Emerald Ant’s clubs for British and Afghan girls, whose families are relocated to the UK on the ARAP scheme. It is funded by Dorset Community Foundation’s Welcome Fund and run by artist Sarah Butterworth and youth worker, Stacy Burke. The club may be the only opportunity the Afghans have to socialize with their English peers, who in turn, get to learn about different cultures.
Afghan young women have missed out on years of education, and due to their English not being A level standard, they are still unable to attend school. The club ends in April, we are looking for funding to continue this meaningful work.
